Information from Toadal Adventures

We were in touch with Deb of Toadal Adventures today. We asked her a bit more about what we could expect. Here's what we learned:
Power Boat Transfer
We will travel from Placencia out to Silk Caye via power boat. Once on Silk Caye we will begin our kayaking expedition. Students will receive a introduction to paddling technique which will include "wet exit" practice - falling out of the kayak when it capsizes. Followed by how to get back in. I can't think of a better place to wet exit. Warm, crystal clear, water.
SPF 30
Using sunscreen with a spf of 30 or higher is a good idea. And reapply it often. Sunbathing is not a good idea. Staying well hydrated is a good idea. We will be sure to make this happen with frequent water breaks. Proper hydration is the first step in preventing heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
Emergency Communication
Our guide will have a cell phone for emergency use.
Dangerous Marine Life
When asked about this Deb commented on the occasional Jelly Fish, that can deliver a minor sting with little discomfort that can last for an hour.
Malaria
Deb encourages us to follow the CDC recommendations. She has lived in Belize for 16 years and hasn't had Malaria. Better safe than sorry.

Travelers information from the CDC
If you haven't already done so, be sure and visit the Centers for Disease Control's website and see what they recommend.

*map from the CDC website
Folks have been asking questions about anti malaria medication, vaccine info, and more. Our advice, is to read over the CDC's info and check with your Doctor and/or travel clinic ASAP.
Students and Parent/Guardians are responsible for making necessary preparations.

Bake Sale for the Belizean Library

Great job organizing the bake sale this past week! It was a great success. The money raised will go to the library in Placencia to purchase those sleeves that hold the sign out cards in the back of the books (you know the ones). Looking forward to visiting the library when we head to Belize next month.
